Petition To The Washington Post To Express Reader Dissatisfaction With The Post's Inaccurate and Slanted Coverage of the Arab Israeli Conflict
To: Katharine Weymouth and Marcus Brauchli, The Washington Post
EyeOnThePost, Inc. is sponsoring this petition to let the Washington Post know of wide-spread dissatisfaction in the Community with its coverage of the Arab-Israel conflict.
Readers' Petition:
The Washington Post's coverage of the conflict between Israel and Its Arab neighbors in the Middle East is unfair and biased. The Post's opinionated and agenda driven reporting is characterized by:
- portrayal of events taken out of historical and current political context,
- use of sources lacking credibility or authority or not fairly representative of opinions other than that of agenda driven individuals,
- acceptance and repetition of versions of events from sources long shown to be totally lacking in credibility,
- seeking out and relying upon quotes and source material from organizations known to be politically hostile to Israel, such as the so-called "human rights" organizations, while rarely seeking out or quoting spokespersons or organizations supportive of Israel or even neutral toward both sides of the conflict.
- distorting terminology so as to deny the existence of terrorism and terrorists by banning the use of those terms, while at the same time using words to describe terrorists in a milder and/or more noble fashion, to wit, as "fighters" and sometimes only as "Palestinians,"
- blurring and often conflating the moral distinction between acts of aggression and acts of self defense,
- depicting as morally equivalent Israel's defense against terrorism and terrorism itself,
- downplaying the plight of Israeli victims of terrorism by inadequately covering the impact of the daily bombardment of Sderot and by failing to provide up close and personal accounts of individual Israeli victims of terrorism,
- publishing sympathetic photographs and stories about the terrorists and their sponsors,
- publishing sympathetic photographs and stories about Palestinians suffering collateral damage as a result of Israel responding to terrorist provocation,
- failing to adequately report the embedding of terrorists among the Palestinian civilian population so as to make civilian casualties unavoidable,
- Employing hyperbole and front page placement of headlines and stories conveying the Palestinian narrative, while burying the Israeli position and response deep within the same articles and often deep within the interior of the paper itself.
I join with thousands of others in the Community in urging the Washington Post to return and adhere to responsible journalistic standards of accurate, fair and balanced reporting on Israel.
Sincerely,
The Undersigned
